The ethos of The Arts Society is that arts projects benefit everyone and individual societies are encouraged to engage in projects in a wide range of Arts to groups of all ages in their local communities.

In Chiswick, we have focused on youth projects and so far, we have concentrated on awarding grants to give access to the arts to those who wouldn't normally have access to them. The projects are funded from surplus income and Arts Society grants.

Our Young Arts programmes, described below, support a wide range of activities to introduce young people to and engage them in artistic experience and practice.

WOODBRIDGE PARK EDUCATION SERVICE

A multi-site Alternative Provision serving the London Borough of Hounslow from the Early Years Foundation Stage up to Key Stage Five, catering for a variety of pupils who are not able to be educated within a mainstream setting.

This year, The Arts Society Chiswick (TASCH) gave 2 x Black and Decker portable workbenches plus a woodwork class tools set. In previous years, we have donated a Hip Hop Dancer performance; A Light Box; Waterproof frames for outside gallery and an Electronic Keyboard.

HOUNSLOW MUSIC SERVICE (HMS)

Being involved with music through lessons and playing in bands and ensembles has been scientifically proven to bring a wealth of social, emotional and educational benefits to children and young people. HMS provides instrumental and vocal lessons to learners of all ages and all abilities both in and out of school time.  They work alongside schools to support the delivery or musical education across the Borough.

Previously, The Arts Society Chiswick (TASCH) purchased a musical instrument, which was used by a talented student and has now been passed on to a younger talented pupil. This year, we were excited to sponsor a trip for the Junior Brass Band to attend and perform at the National Youth Brass Band Championships in Derby.  This very diverse group of 45 children enjoyed extra practice sessions.  They performed in a non-competitive section and all gained confidence from the opportunity to perform.

Alan Goodall sent a very positive report about the event thanking TASCH for the generous donation that enabled participation in the brass band championships.

HOGARTH TRUST YOUTH CENTRE

Hogarth Youth Centre has been running for over 60 years and provides a varied programme for the young people in our local community. They come from very diverse backgrounds and prize access to a safe and secure place outside school and home. The programme offers art, crafts, music, cookery and sports at their after-school clubs and during the school holidays.

TASCH supported them with a Community Grant, awarded by The Arts Society, for much needed paper, stationery, card, T-shirts, transfer paper, paint, bags and baseball caps.

MAGIC LANTERN

An arts education charity that uses great works of art to help children observe and explore the world around them.

TASCH funded 6 sessions: 3 at a primary school and 3 at a school for children with special needs.

Excellent feedback from the teachers which included “Fantastically engaging.  A great range of images and references.  The class was gripped, engaged and very excited.”

Fantastic workshop, the children were clearly excited to act out the scenes of Art/History. They were very animated throughout. Every child got involved and were keen to answer questions and share their thoughts. The session was a great opportunity for the children to consolidate what they have already learnt but it also gave them opportunity to extend their learning. Many children left the session with lots of enthusiasm to find out more about topics and artwork that was mentioned during the session. KOESTLER ARTS

The UK’s best-known prison arts charity has been operating for 60 years. They encourage young people in the criminal justice system to change their lives by participating in the arts. They then share their artworks with the public, so people can witness this diverse range of voices, stories and talent.

Koestler Arts was pleased to return to the Supreme Court for a public display of artwork by under-18s in the summer of 2022. Every piece on display was created by a young person in a secure setting or under supervision with a youth offending service. Together they provided a glimpse of these artists’ talents, struggles, interests and hopes for the future. There were 29 pieces on display, including poetry, photography, woodwork, drawing, spray paint and collage.

The exhibition was supported by TASCH with matching funds from The Arts Society Patricia Fay Memorial Fund.

Annually, Koestler Arts mounts a large exhibition of arts works at the Royal Festival Hall: the 2022 exhibition was curated by Ai Weiwei and features several thousand artworks, amongst which are artworks from Feltham Young Offenders Institution. Committee members visited Koestler to view 19 artworks and together with Koestler chose the 5 Chiswick Arts Society awards given to artworks from Feltham Young Offenders Institution.  Each award winner will receive £25.
